Shadows

Without my darkness you are only light. No shadow, no form. No form, no movement. You reach for the passage of time where you once thought it would be. Instead you find my trail of shadows. Nothing to touch, nothing that soothes. You miss me searching for you where curves hide in the light. My hand drifts on the jagged perch between darkness and light until you find the trail of my aftermath leading you to where our curvatures meet. You find the forms that only you and I can create. You find you are time and all I offer is the shadow underfoot. I shrink as the sun climbs to its apex, only lengthening again with the sun’s permission to push aside the fears that come with a moment that never existed.

My darkness circles you, wrapping its love around you. In the infinite hollows of time, I grow to match the power of your light until the sun takes its respite, preparing to meet you again in the half-wake state that brought you to me. I wipe the tear filled with your sorrow. I look into your eyes filling with grief. Overflowing and spilling too quickly for me to catch. Another day spent. Another day spilled wetting the ground at your feet. Another day of tears fills with regret. My darkness is my story of shame, is my beckoning to be more than light. It is my calling to bring your unhappiness a place to stop, to rest, and to carry it away when your light claims me for your own. You mold me into the shape that blankets my ever changing heart; my ever changing pain. I need your light to remind me I will return. I will be there when the tears fall. I will be your darkness until you have no need for me to give you shape and motion. My darkness is yours until you rest in the realization that your light is the universal call to love, to live, if only to survive. My darkness continues to gather the tears falling at your feet until the river we’ve made washes away both dark and light; washes us away into the waters that whisper promises of home. Together we remember to use our shadow and move through the infinity to find the passage that is we.
